Ko tō tūranga – your role

As the AI & Data Solution Engineer, your role is to deliver hands-on AI and data engineering solutions that help One NZ become the most AI-enabled telco in the world. You’ll work closely with business stakeholders, squads and technical teams to understand business needs and turn them into secure, scalable and production-ready AI and data solutions. This role blends AI, data engineering, business analysis and solution architecture disciplines, helping reduce handoffs, accelerate delivery and build cross-discipline capability across our workforce.

Ko tō mahi – what you’ll do

• Deliver day-to-day AI and data engineering work across squads and delivery streams.
• Build, test, deploy and maintain secure, scalable and production-ready solution components.
• Apply agreed engineering frameworks, reusable patterns, coding standards, DevOps/AgentOps practices and governance requirements.
• Translate business and technical requirements into practical AI, data, integration and automation outputs.
• Design and maintain data pipelines, data products, AI-enabled workflows, APIs, dashboards, models, prompts, agents and related solution components.
• Support responsible AI, data governance, privacy, cyber security, access control, observability, reliability and operational support expectations.
• Contribute to testing, AI evaluation, performance validation, documentation, runbooks and deployment activities.
• Work through technical challenges and changing requirements, escalating risks and blockers early while contributing practical solution options.
• Create and maintain clear technical documentation, including solution notes, data mappings, design inputs, test evidence, operational guides and knowledge-sharing material.
• Continuously develop capability across AI, data, cloud, software engineering and modern delivery practices.

Na tōu rourou - what you’ll bring

• Hands-on experience designing, building, testing, deploying and maintaining AI and data solution components using modern engineering practices.
• Strong foundations in data structures, SQL and data modelling as well as data quality, reporting and analytics
• Working knowledge of AI and GenAI solution patterns

• Familiarity with Python, SQL, AWS and relevant data or AI platforms.
• The ability to turn requirements, designs, standards and technical guidance into working solution components that support squad and delivery stream outcomes.
• Strong systems thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work through ambiguity and identify practical solution options.
• Clear communication and collaboration skills, with confidence working alongside functional and technical stakeholders.
• Curiosity and a continuous learning mindset across AI, data, cloud and engineering disciplines.
• A responsible delivery mindset, with an understanding of responsible AI, data privacy, cyber security, compliance, operational risk and customer trust.
