Ko tō tūranga – your role

As the Legal Counsel, your role is to provide pragmatic, commercial, and customer-centred legal services to One New Zealand. Working within a collaborative, highly skilled, and respected legal team that supports a wide range of business areas.  You’ll have a particular focus on brand and marketing, product development, customer experience, and regulatory law.

You will be a trusted advisor who helps enable One NZ’s strategic priorities by balancing legal risk with commercial outcomes, simplifying processes, and improving service delivery always keeping customers and business impact at the centre of your advice.

 

Please note this is a 12-month fixed term opportunity.

Ko tō mahi – what you’ll do

  • Deliver high-quality, pragmatic legal advice aligned with One NZ’s commercial goals and strategic priorities.
  • Advise on consumer protection, fair trading, competition, and regulatory law issues across the business.
  • Support resolution of complex customer disputes and regulatory investigations.
  • Identify and manage legal and business risks, ensuring appropriate controls and accountability.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a broad range of commercial, technology, and intellectual property agreements.
  • Build strong, trusted relationships with internal business partners across all levels and functions.
  • Work closely with external counsel to deliver efficient and value-adding legal solutions.
  • Communicate complex legal concepts clearly, persuasively, and accessibly to non-legal audiences.
  • Collaborate across teams to promote consistent, customer-focused legal outcomes.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and provide proactive compliance guidance.
  • Maintain and enhance precedent documentation, templates, and legal processes.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify and improve ways of working, enhance business capability, and drive innovation.

  • Admitted as a Barrister & Solicitor on New Zealand 
  • Sound judgment, a practical mindset, and the ability to balance legal risk with business opportunity.
  • Strong knowledge and/or interest in consumer law, competition law, and related commercial and regulatory frameworks.
  • Strong negotiation and influencing skills with a focus on practical solutions.
  • Relationship building skills with the ability to establish trust and credibility with diverse stakeholders.
  • A resilient and adaptable mindset. Comfortable with complexity, ambiguity, and change in a fast-paced environment.
  • A self-starter who anticipates issues, acts with initiative, and works autonomously.
  • Team-oriented and supportive, fostering a “people-first” and solution-driven approach.
  • Demonstrates ethical judgment, confidentiality, and discretion.
