Ko tō tūranga – your role
As the Data Ops Engineer – Data & AI Platforms, you’ll ensure One NZ’s data products and pipelines are governed, observable, and cost-aware from source to consumption. You’ll lead the standardisation of DataOps practices, embed privacy and policy controls, optimise cost-to-serve, and collaborate across teams to deliver trusted, scalable data that powers analytics and AI with fewer incidents.
Ko tō mahi – what you’ll do
- Define SLIs/SLOs for data freshness, completeness, timeliness, and pipeline success. Build dashboards, alerts, and traces, and ensure every material change includes readiness gate evidence.
- Set and automate acceptance criteria for production and support readiness across security, privacy, observability, and FinOps. Ensure changes are small, reversible, and well-documented.
- Align support structures, on-call coverage, escalation paths, and playbooks with Service Management and partners for both BAU and after-hours operations. Maintain current and usable runbooks.
- Enforce tagging to surface product-level costs, monitor budget variances and anomalies, and drive safe optimisations such as caching, batching, and model sizing.
- Collaborate with AIOps on feature and embedding stores, retrieval/RAG patterns, and schema design. Ensure SLAs, caching, and data structures support reliability, safety, and cost goals.
- Maintain up-to-date standards, diagrams, evaluation reports, and runbooks to ensure clean handovers and reduce single points of failure.
Na tōu rourou - what you’ll bring
- Strong experience with Snowflake features including warehouses, tasks, streams, pipes, performance and cost tuning, micro-partitions, caching, zero-copy cloning, masking and row access policies, tagging, governance, Snowpark, and external tables.
- Proficiency with AWS services such as Bedrock and SageMaker (or equivalents), serverless runtimes, event-driven architecture, CI/CD pipelines, observability tools (CloudWatch/OpenTelemetry), and secure connectivity.
- Hands-on experience with data ingestion and change data capture (CDC) from on-prem, SaaS, and cloud sources.
- Skilled in resilient orchestration (idempotence, retries, backoff), schema evolution, data contracts, and managing small, reversible changes.
- Deep understanding of data ingestion, identity resolution, harmonisation, segmentation, activation, and governance — with a focus on how Data Cloud supports AI/RAG use cases and downstream observability.
- Experience with Terraform-first provisioning across AWS, Snowflake, and Salesforce integrations.
- Skilled in HashiCorp Vault for secrets management, PKI, dynamic credentials, policy-as-code, automated rotation, and audit trails.
- Proven ability to define and manage SLIs/SLOs, implement tracing, logging, and alerting, lead incident response and post-incident reviews, automate change and rollback processes, and apply resilience patterns.
- Comfortable working with Support, Service Management, and vendors for both BAU and after-hours coverage.
